VAR System Introduced for First Time in Albanian Football

Albanian football will be officially using VAR system starting this Saturday. The newest technological football system will be present in today's Teuta-Vllaznia Super Cup and beyond in 180 Kategoria Superiore games and in the quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals of the Albanian Cup.

Albanian Football Association (AFA) informs that for a few weeks IT has tested and implemented VAR in friendly and training games. Already goals and penalties in Albania will not be judged with commentators and from television studios, but directly 'live' by the referee and VAR.

AFA's announcement:

Albanian football officially launches today the new season with Albania's Super Cup finals between Teuta and Vllaznia, played at the Stadium "Elbasan Arena" at 19:00. In this match will be used for the first time in Albania, the Video Assistant Referee, which is the innovation and the largest investment of the Albanian Football Association  in the new football edition.

Full of 180 Matches of the Superior Category 2021/2022 will be played with the VAR system, while this system will be used in the Albania Cup starting from the quarterfinals to the Great Final.

For several weeks, AFA has organized the process of implementing the video assistant of the arbitrator through testing in some friendly matches and recent training to start its application from today.

The process has been divided into three phases, where the theoretical seminars have been developed with the referees where they were introduced to technology, providing information on the ways of using equipment for all technical and arbitrators. Seminars are led by Alexander Papin, representative of EVS and Mike van der Roest, project leader VAR in FIFA.

Also, training was carried out, with real matches and at the stadium where the television broadcast is also attached to the VAR system, in which arbitrators act as in real matches, where in case of dubious decisions communicate with VAR and require its intervention. Video Assistant aims to minimize the arbitrator's human errors and the implementation of this system will significantly affect the fairer decisions on the playing field.
