A 76-year-old man has died while attempting to extinguish a fire that broke out in his olive grove in the village of Greshicë, in Mallakastër, southern Albania, authorities said.

The victim was identified as Nazif Cenaj. According to preliminary information, Cenaj entered the area after a fire broke out on his property, reportedly in an effort to put out the flames.

Strong winds are believed to have caused the fire to spread rapidly, with the flames reaching Cenaj and causing his death at the scene.

Firefighters and police officers were dispatched to the area following the incident. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

In a statement, police said that at around noon, the 76-year-old, was suspected of having started a fire on his land to burn waste. Police said he subsequently lost his life while attempting to extinguish the flames.
