Albania Dismisses former Shkodra Police Chief over Alleged Misconduct
State police have dismissed former Shkodra police chief Gentian Berberi following a disciplinary investigation into allegations that he threatened and verbally abused a senior police official, authorities said.
Berberi had previously been suspended after an incident at the General Directorate of the State Police. According to authorities, he allegedly confronted the head of the Human Resources Directorate, verbally insulting and threatening her while expressing dissatisfaction with his reassignment.
The official subsequently filed a criminal complaint with the Police Oversight Agency, prompting an internal disciplinary investigation.
Police Director General Skënder Hita ordered Berberi's suspension immediately after the complaint was filed, while the Directorate of Professional Standards launched disciplinary proceedings.
The investigation concluded with a decision to dismiss Berberi from the State Police. The decision will become final only after it is reviewed by the Appeals Commission.
Berberi had been reassigned to the Police Analysis Sector after being removed as head of the Shkodra Police Directorate, where authorities cited poor performance in efforts to combat cannabis cultivation.
