High Prosecutorial Council Appoints Joni Keta as New Director of National Bureau of Investigation

The High Prosecutorial Council (HPC) convened today to review and vote on the leadership of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), appointing Joni Keta as the new director of the institution often referred to as the “Albanian FBI”.

Keta, who previously served as the deputy director of the NBI, was elected with 11 votes in favour and none against, securing unanimous support from the Council. He will serve a five-year term, succeeding Aida Hajnaj, the agency’s first director. Under current regulations, Keta will also be eligible for reappointment once his mandate concludes.

The selection process lasted several months and included seven candidates, among them senior police officials and prosecutors. The NBI, established as part of Albania’s justice reform, plays a central role in investigating complex crimes, corruption and organized criminal networks.

Aida Hajnaj led the Bureau during its inaugural mandate, overseeing its formation and early operational development. Keta’s appointment marks the institution’s second leadership transition since its creation.
