Israeli Forces Detain Albanian Activist Aboard Gaza-Bound Humanitarian Flotilla

Israeli forces on Tuesday detained Albanian activist Baki Goxhaj while he was aboard the humanitarian flotilla “Global Sumud,” an international mission sailing toward Gaza with the stated aim of delivering aid to civilians affected by the ongoing war.

The flotilla departed from the Marmaris region in Turkey and reportedly consisted of 54 vessels carrying around 426 activists from 39 countries. According to organizers, the mission sought to draw international attention to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and provide assistance to civilians living under blockade.

Israeli authorities, however, said they would not allow any breach of the naval blockade imposed on Gaza, describing the flotilla as a provocative action. The Israeli navy intervened in the eastern Mediterranean, where organizers claim at least 28 vessels were stopped, while others continued their course.

Footage broadcast from aboard the ships appeared to show Israeli military vessels approaching the flotilla, with soldiers boarding several of the detained boats.

Among those detained was Albanian activist Baki Goxhaj, whose arrest prompted a response from Albania’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. In an official statement, the ministry confirmed it is aware of the situation and has initiated communication with Israeli authorities through diplomatic channels.

“The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has been informed about the case of Albanian citizen Baki Goxhaj, who is aboard the ‘Sumud’ flotilla.

Through diplomatic channels, the Ministry has been in communication with the competent Israeli authorities from the very first moment to secure full information regarding the situation and to guarantee the respect of the Albanian citizen’s rights, including consular access, in accordance with international practices and conventions.

The Ministry is following the matter with full priority and remains in continuous contact with Mr. Goxhaj’s family members. Further information regarding the procedures expected to follow will be provided in due course,” the statement said.

Hours before being detained by Israeli forces, Goxhaj had shared a message on social media from aboard the humanitarian vessel. In his post, he referred to the historic role of Albanians in protecting Jews during World War II, describing it as one of the brightest chapters in Albania’s history.
