While opposition supporters continue to stage public protests involving Molotov cocktails and fireworks against the government and Prime Minister Edi Rama, a quieter political development is unfolding behind the scenes.

Away from media attention, Albania’s two largest political forces — the Democratic Party and the Socialist Party — are working together on a series of consensual laws ?????? the country’s Electoral Reform.

Both parties obtained a joint draft prepared by experts from both parties, focusing specifically on the financing of political parties.

According to the proposed legislation, strict limits would be placed on financial contributions. Albanian citizens would be allowed to donate up to 200,000 lek annually, while registered individual taxpayers could contribute up to 500,000 lek per year. Legal entities would face a maximum contribution cap of 1,000,000 lek annually.

The draft also stipulates that any donation exceeding 50,000 lek must be conducted exclusively through the banking system, aiming to increase transparency and accountability.

The document is expected to be made public for consultation before proceeding through formal approval procedures in Parliament.
