Berisha’s Opposition Unity Proposal Rejected by Three Political Leaders
A proposal by Albanian opposition leader Sali Berisha to join forces with other opposition parties to push for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation has been rejected by three prominent political figures.
Adriatik Lapaj, Agron Shehaj and Arlind Qori, who appeared on the television program Të Paekspozuarit on Vizion Plus on Thursday evening, each dismissed the possibility of political cooperation with Berisha and the Democratic Party.
Adriatik Lapaj, leader of the Albania Becomes movement, argued that both Rama and Berisha should step away from the political scene, while stressing that he does not equate Berisha with the Democratic Party’s supporters or lawmakers.
“Rama and Berisha should withdraw from the political scene. They have nothing more to offer Albania today. But I cannot equate Berisha with the Democrats,” Lapaj said.
Lapaj also proposed using the local elections scheduled for May 9 as an opportunity to put forward candidates emerging from protests, student movements and new political parties. He argued that political unity does not necessarily require formal agreements between party leaders.
Meanwhile, Agron Shehaj, leader of the Mundësia Party, also rejected Berisha’s invitation to form a coalition, recalling that he had turned down a similar proposal ahead of the 2025 elections.
“When Berisha invited us to form a coalition in 2025, we did not say no because we were not patriotic enough or because of ego. Quite simply, we did not consider it the right decision — and thankfully, we did not do it,” Shehaj stated.
Arlind Qori, leader of the Together Movement, took an equally firm position, ruling out any possibility of cooperation with Berisha and describing him as Edi Rama’s political counterpart.
“Edi Rama is the worst holder of power, but Berisha is his political brother,” Qori said.
Qori further accused both political leaders of sharing interests with oligarchs and construction industry figures. He also criticized Berisha for extending an invitation to cooperate just days after publicly attacking him.
Berisha made his appeal for broader opposition cooperation during an interview on Now with Erla Mëhilli on Wednesday evening. In addition to calling on opposition parties to unite, the Democratic Party leader also addressed the possibility of creating a new leadership structure within the party.
