Rama Denies Claims of Development Project in Porto Palermo Bay
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that the government is planning a development project in Porto Palermo Bay, insisting that the area is protected from construction.
In a video published on Sunday, Rama rejected claims shared online, including those by journalist Klevin Muka, describing them as misinformation. He said he had personally ensured that no construction would be permitted in the bay and that the site has been designated a protected natural monument.
Rama explained that the images and plans being circulated were architectural masterplans commissioned by private landowners and included in the publication Albanian Files. According to the prime minister, several of those proposals were never approved by the National Territorial Council, demonstrating that the institution operates independently and does not automatically endorse private development plans.
He accused critics of misrepresenting those documents as evidence of government-backed projects, arguing that the allegations are part of a broader campaign of disinformation targeting his administration.
Rama also announced that the government is moving forward with measures to preserve the entire Porto Palermo Bay from future construction. He said authorities are finalizing plans for a Cold War museum and the rehabilitation of a nearby former military facility for tourism purposes.
“Porto Palermo Bay has been declared a natural monument, and we are working to protect the entire area from construction,” Rama said, adding that the government remains committed to safeguarding the site's environmental and historical value.
The prime minister concluded by warning about the spread of online misinformation, saying false claims risk misleading the public and undermining informed debate.
